A&M Records

Sting
Sting in Alachua County on his first solo tour in October 1985

After writing about Dark Horse Records, I went to Wikipedia and clicked on their original distributor A&M Records and found that the label would be relaunched. However, no sources such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, NME, Variety or the like were cited, making this a mere rumour, as Wikipedia can be unreliable if anyone can just put something up, making Fleet Street look like Utne Reader. A&M has been largely dormant in recent years, especially since the late '90s when PolyGram were sold to Universal. The former bought A&M, Island and Polar a decade earlier. In the US, A&M were clustered with Interscope and Geffen. The split between Universal Studios and Music Group in 2003 changed things further. Octone moved from J/BMG to A&M after the old BMG launched their JV with Sony in 2004 and Maroon 5 would eventually appear on Interscope. Sting has been carrying the torch of A&M since he was in the Police in the late '70s and only a few classical releases are on sister label Deutsche Grammophone (he'll be in Syracuse again in April 2026 with Billy Joel, which was postponed). Rick Wakeman had a solo deal with A&M coming out of the Strawbs, but it complicated what he could do in Yes at first, and A&M didn't always support his decisions, and he left the label and Yes in 1980, despite personal issues at the time.

Polydor UK did relaunch A&M on their end once and signed Duffy (on an equally brief reboot of Mercury [not counting Nashville like with MCA] across the pond). Jim Diamond released his first two solo albums on A&M, yet put out his fourth on Polydor, which could either have been to complete the old deal because an A&R left, or was an unrelated new one. His widow would have to answer that.

Supertramp would work their way up to become of the biggest successes for A&M. Roger Hodgson would stay on his own after leaving in 1983 for the first couple solo LPs before a long hiatus. The Carpenters safe as houses sound brought gold and platinum despite their Karens eating disorder. Amy Grant blazed a trail for the Lord being between A&M and Christian label Myrrh making her catalogue more available and becoming the cross-over queen. The Canadian branch had Bryan Adams, Gino Vannelli, Andy Kim, Susan Jacks, Terry Jacks, Bruce Cockburn, Véronique Béliveau, Jann Arden; Sharon, Lois & Bram; Fred Penner, and Raffi (even the Cancon kiddie scene counts). The boys tried to sign with A&M, but were turned down (their loss). Styx and Supertramp were the biggest international acts at the Toronto arm and overall in Canada since the Beatles and Elvis Presley, I would suppose.

I gave you the Cliffs Notes version of A&Ms history, yet we need something that confirms a new one is about to start. The label has a rich legacy and you'd never think it was technically indie in the old days.

Dedicated to the memory of Jerry Moss, who would have been proud to see the label return, despite the two legal rows he and his former colleague Herb Alpert have had with the two subsequent owners over its corporate culture (Alpert moved his lot to a new vanity label since then).

Musify/Myzuka

Courtesy Round Hill Records

By the cover art can be obtained from Round Hill Music / Zuma Rock Records., Fair useLink

It seems like sister pirate mp3 sites Myzuka.club and Musify.club have lost the plot. After uploading dozens of albums to both simultaneously (it's a package deal) for over a decade, it seems they don't want anymore from me. I uploaded two albums they don't have yet, The Messenger from Pallas and Loaded: The Greatest Hits 1994-2023 by Bush (pictured). For the latter, I worked around it by going to an unofficial compilation by updating tracks that had a lower bit rate and adding ones not already there. I had downloaded the new official one legally from amazon since I got it free when I bought the CD from them around the time of Gavin Rossdales birthday and the bands most recent show in my area last fall. Pallas on the other hand are more limited by comparison. Had to go to another site for them. Can't afford Bandcamp too. To boot, band leader and manager Graeme Murray is also a barrister (albeit in criminal law rather than civil), so it may be karma for both bands; also considering neo-prog contemporaries' IQ and Jadis' Martin Orfords war or piracy. Since I can't access Pallas' new album on Musify or amazon at this stage, I had to put those mp3s on my Google drive to stream them from my phone. I would rather have the CD anyway, and I'll get it when it's available affordably. I may have invested heavily in Jadis and Denny Laine due to their catalogues' scarcity, but that's for another post.
It's too easy to download or stream these days. Vinyl is back (like it never left, but again, for another day). It's like trading in something at the shop. Even if it's something they don't have and not on every corner, they still may not want it. I'm not going to waste time, money or data trying to upload them again. I tried contacting them, but have not heard back. Anyone looking for either of these albums on those site are on their own. File-sharing networks (Warez) like the old Napster, Limewire, BitTorrent, Kazaa and the Pirate Bay aren't as common anymore and can still cause damage to your devices. I actually don't upload or download as much as I used to nowadays. I don't even stream much TV. As for those sites, if I upload one more album and they don't do a thing, they'll never get another from me again. No one makes one ruble from it anyhow, which proves a point. Most of my old files have been wiped or disappeared over the years. Some are off of CDs I still have, but I can't rip them like I used to. Better to cut my losses and lossy files and just move on. (UPDATE: The Pallas one was uploaded by another person already, yet is not recognised in the bands discography.)

eMusic

Current logo.
eMusic is where I go for independent artists on official mp3.  Doesn't mean it's all there.  One artist says he didn't get too much return (Spotify pays even less) and a label head in LA says it's a ripoff.  I managed to find a number of albums for over a decade.  They even had major label releases for a period before going back to their indie roots.  I truly would rather have everything on both LP and CD when I can.  Also there isn't always something there not at the other place.  What I do find I put on that site later.  I can only suspend my account twice a year and I won't cancel as something comes up eventually if I look for people I know.  My credits usually refresh when I pay my subscription for internet, so I'm able to download by then.

UPDATE: I have cancelled my account as this is a lost cause.

Myzuka.ru / Myzuka.org

No translation necessary!
As Swedens The Pirate Bay walks the plank, another Russian mp3 site is in proverbial purgatory itself.  Myzuka.ru hasn't been running in the past few weeks.  Either the servers crashed or IFPI made them pull the plug whichever came first.  Like rival site musicmp3 one could upload mp3s (though musicmp3 are not taking submissions now either).  I found myzuka last year while looking up a Roger Hodgson bootleg and I recognised the cover I drew as someone else downloaded it from here or somewhere else.  I keep getting a 403 but it may as well be a 404 or 500.  IQ founding ex-member Martin Orford, the Mary Whitehouse of piracy, will be relieved that both these sites are taken off (he already slated the torrent site).  No ones knows what happened here.  An e-mail to the site has not been answered.  Could be the end of the road for places like this as the industry fights back.

UPDATE: Site is back online after a months time; now a .fm.

Non-US made only (even if its just the disc or tape itself). Singles can also be thrown in if I don't have them already. Do contact me if you're interested in a trade or sale. CD-Rs do not count! Pirates are OK though. If you think somethings missing, then I have it already. Subject to change at anytime. Will make reasonable offers. If you suggest VHS cassette or DVDs, make sure it'll play in an NTSC player.  I can possibly convert PAL and SECAM DVDs, but the tapes I'd have to go to a specialist for, so do ask first or copy it for me, please. I may list what video titles I'd like at a later time, but it is painstaking and time-consuming. Mainly CDs I need right now though wanted LPs are now in a separate list to avoid confusion. Subject to change.

+ Yet to be released.

+++I only have this on LP and/or cassette right now which isn't as convenient for me anymore.

Roger Hodgson - Live in Chile 1998

Roger Hodgson in Danmark.

This is from a tour Roger Hodgson took in 1998 in South America, his first ever alone. Accompanied only by a rhythm section, some songs are bare-boned compared to the originals, such as "Give a Little Bit" and "It's Raining Again", so use your imagination! I can't quite remember where I got it as I can't find another site that has this, so here it is! Not an official release.

School
In Jeopardy
Lady
Hide in Your Shell
Death and a Zoo (not yet released at the time!)
Fool's Overture
Dreamer
Don't Leave Me Now
The Logical Song
Give a Little Bit
It's Raining Again

Bonus tracks:

Breakfast in America (from Euro Express 739U)
Dreamer (demo)
Give a Little Bit (with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band)

Supertramp - 40th Anniversary Tour

Supertramp (1970)

A French site says that Supertramp will reunite for a 40th Anniversary tour later this year. However, this is speculation. No official announcement has been made by Power Steering Management. Also, it is not likely that Roger Hodgson will be back in the fold, as he has his own tour anyway, which he prefers doing, though a one-off appearance couldn't hurt. Also not returning is Mark Hart, as he told me by e-mail a couple years ago that Crowded House has crowded his schedule. He sang the Hodgson tracks on the 1987-88, 1997-98, and 2002-03 tours, so it might be likely that it will be like the 1985-86 tour, where only Rick Davies's songs were performed. Hart also informed me that the band amicably split after the Slow Motion tour in 2003. Carl Verheyen has his own band now, so I don't know about him coming back either. Forget about Dougie Thomson being there. John Helliwell and Bob Siebenberg are likely to be back.
No other site has mentioned the rumoured tour. To this day, there are still fans who won't listen to the post-Hodgson Brother Where You Bound or anything made after that. Even I'm still on the fence about that. The whole is better than the sum of the parts.
The tour is only said to be in mainland Europe, but more dates may follow. Like with many veteran acts on the road today, there is no new product to promote, so it's seen as a "money tour". Also, the sites under construction, so its a sign that it could happen, but still, an official statement will set things right.

These tracks were saved from a Roger Hodgson fan site that has since 404'ed. Some of these are live and demo versions of familiar Supertramp and solo favourites, and there is also hard-to-find and officially unreleased tracks. Know that some of these aren't the best sound quality.

Roger Hodgson - Take the Long Way Home (live 1996)

Live version from his 1996 comeback Rites of Passage, filmed at the Miner's Foundry in Nevada City, CA (where he's been a tax dodge for about three decades). His son Andrew is on drums, and John Helliwell, then still in Supertramp (his loyalty was divided after the elder Hodgson's 1983 departure). Very laid back atmosphere. Like the other video here, this was deleted from YouTube; this one by his managers (1984's "In Jeopardy" was the most popular with praise from outside the Anglosphere, but I digress). It was saved from a fan site that was renovated.
I wonder if an official video exists of the studio version. Even a mimed TV appearance I'll take. Let me know if there is one. I looked already, but maybe not hard enough.
Take the Long Way Home is also the name of old man Hodgson's only solo DVD, which was big in Canada, where he's better known than on my side of Lake Ontario. On that note, does anyone have extra tickets to his Ottawa, ONT show in May?

Roger Hodgson - Rites of Passage

Also saved from emusic:

This was his first release overall since his accident a decade before, and his first and only official live album to date. Like now, he is mainly alone on keyboard and guitar. I hope he goes back to Supertramp one day. None of us are getting any younger! A 1997 release on Voiceprint. Some of the tracks are sung by others in the band, much like Rick Davies did back in Supertramp on his songs. "Smelly Feat" is one example. Hodgson's solo track record is sporadic. The rest aren't on emusic because they're on major labels, though many mp3 sites have most or all of them anyway.

Reunions

Here are bands I'd like to see get back together:

ABBA (a lot of people would agree!)
Black Sabbath
Culture Club
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Genesis (one last time)
Gentle Giant
Renaissance
Supertramp
Talk Talk
Yes
The Smiths (not for me but this bird in Wales)

Who would you like to see reunite?
