In Memorium: A Posthumous Wishlist

Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Cozy Powell.

There are artists on mine and Boris's* wishlists who are no longer with us. Many of their CDs and LPs are hard to find. Some cultures keep in touch with the deceased so I call on these legends for their guidance finding what they left behind:

Dearly departed, please help me find the work in which you each have been immortalised. May you all rest in peace.  We the living miss you all.  In loving memory.  Bless you all!
Names I've deleted from the lists must've gotten the message!  Must be working then.

Honourable mentions: Mariska Veres from Shocking Blue, who I didn't know qualified for the list until after I found their CD.*  Then original Gentle Giant drummer Martin Smith as I found their first two albums on CD and forgot to put him here knowing that he's gone too.  Then Peter Haycock from ELO Part II as I finally found that as well.*

Dr Ebbetts

CD-R of Canadian release

Many of you "Beatle People" may be familiar with "Dr" Drew Ebbetts, a fan who took matters into his own hands when it seemed that EMI would never release new improved remasters of the original UK albums.  He seemed to cover different permutations and compilations from across the globe as well as some bootlegs.  He would use LightScribe technology to print realistic labels onto the discs even though the fact that he used blank CD-Rs (popular with bootleggers on a budget) and a hi-res colour printer.  A bit of a project innit?  When the remasters were finally hit shop shelves on 9 September 2009, Ebbie decided to pack it in knowing he couldn't compete with the big boys.  Maybe he could work on official releases now officially unavailable such as The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl to bootlegs such as Live at the Star Club 1962.  There are also solo releases from all four to settle the score.  Even some tribute albums from Canada!  He could maybe even look into other artists.  No mere needle drops here (without trying to polish up the sound first)!  He must use something like ProTools but Abbey Road did it one better.
The source of most of these pirates are high-quality vinyl.  It's still a few generations removed than when done from the original masters taken from the EMI vaults.  I'd have to have a listen to see how Dr E got on.
I would think because of Ebb-tide he is no longer taking orders so one would have to hunt for copies or look for downloads.  I don't see myself getting a CD of his anytime soon.  I do see pirates at the shop sometime that look like they were done on a computer so I wonder if they're his versions.  It doesn't say.
I don't really have to get anymore official albums for myself except a few latter-day compilations and many singles and the occasional bootleg (when I can afford it).  Dr Ebbetts was a fan who took it to another level.

Pirate CDs on eBay

There is a seller on eBay that sells pirate CDs but won't admit to it. He is from Russia but lives in the LA area. What got me to this dealer is when I was looking for The Road from Mike & the Mechanics, which hasn't been officially released in the States yet. Thats also the case with Analogue from a-ha which I bought around the same time. Empire DVD didn't say they were imports and they were quite affordable for new CDs so that was the first sign. When Analogue came, there was a typo in the lyrics and other hidden clues as I've mentioned before with counterfeit CDs. The Road was spot on though. I bought two more a-ha CDs and will get more from them and others in future. Boris can only send me packages a few times a year while I send one or two a month. Some people have slated EmpireDVD, one for being slow with delivery within the LA region to the elephant in the room with one calling out this baciagaloop for selling pirates, but he was on the defence saying the buyer wanted the CDs for free as piracy also means nicking mp3s, which has become more common in the past decade. Selling pirates and even bootlegs is actually against eBay policy but there are more on there than they realise as millions of auctions and Buy It Now sales are posted daily. eBay, amazon and indie dealer Wishing Well outside Phoenix, AZ are also aware of these knockoff CDs and will not sell or buy them. If you like this kind of CD or DVD then Empire DVD are right for you, but if not, let sleeping dogs lie and go to another seller.

UPDATE: The account no longer has items.  They may have been reported or they ran out of ideas.  Other people may have caught on to them.

Paul McCartney and Wings reissues

Wings 1975 release
This is the first original post of the year.  According to an insert that came with the recent remaster of McCartney, four '70s Paul McCartney and Wings albums will be reissued in 2012.  They are Ram, Venus and Mars (pictured), Wings at the Speed of Sound and Wings Over America.  The three studio releases I have the original US LPs purchased at the time of release and 1993 remasters while the live one is on UK LP, so I can wait on these myself.  Nothing on his site though, or the record companies.  It is not certain when these will be available, as the focus now is on the new standards release Kisses on the Bottom.  Even cassette editions of these albums can cost a few bob on eBay, let alone the CDs!  I read that the remastering of the whole catalogue will be panned out until 2016!  It can take as long to fix up an album as it did to record it in the first place!  You're on your own until then!  Watch this space!
