Tickets, Touts, and Taylor

MickFPall250220_v2_ (34 of 52)
David Gilmour at the Peter Green Tribute Concert, 25/2/20

When oasis announced their reunion tour, fans made a mad rush for tickets, even though they were hundreds of pounds, and they were slated for it. Even worse, touts were already reselling them for even more, so the band are putting a stop to it by making the tickets exclusively for who bought them, just as Kate Bush had a decade ago for her rare residency at the Eventim Apollo (formerly Hammersmith Odeon). On the contrary, her old friend and mentor David Gilmour is about to have his own tour, and  when I looked at downstates dates coming after another event in the tri-state I would like to attend (story for another day, but I'd stay at the same hotel to save time, even if I'd be on the tube late at nights, or run into his former colleague), one was sold out, and the other a right fortune. Ironically, when I went to an article on Pearl Jam (who boycotted Ticketmaster in 1996) and there was a link to a third-party reseller, both dates were available and had seats at a remotely doable price and distant location in the arena. Last time I went there or the region was to see Paul McCartney. He and Peter Gabriel (you can connect the dots by now) were at Taylor Swifts concert in London a while ago (the old guard come to her). Swifties seem to spend less by going overseas than trying to see her in the US. I know it's too easy these days to write about missus, but even she's a scapegoat of the Live Nation/Ticketmaster monopoly. I'm lucky to get to one name show this year, which is Duran Duran back Upstate at the casino, but I'd have to win the pools well before that since I need time to plan and pay for the lot. I also have to see what they're doing with the Fairfield County do the night of Durans own show at the Garden because it can be too much and they're not that close together since it's a big area. Like most people at this stage, essentials come first in this economy before even considering hols or big shows anywhere.

Identity crisis

Arena live at The Waterfront, Norwich, 5th April 2019 - 40598073853
The real Arena, 2019.
kitmasterbloke, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

If an artist or group has a common or generic name, chances are someone else will have it too. Before the internet, that was the case. If one makes it big, the other may contact their solicitors and settle out of court. I wrote a similar post years ago on our sister retail blog. In recent years, when I try to look up some people, I find mp3s from the wrong ones, who may not realise that the "real" one even exist. Spinoffs and disputes over use of the name by former members isn't exactly what I mean since that's a different post entirely. These are the ones I know off hand, but there are tonnes more out there.

Asia (my Asia settled with lesser known mid-West band and lesser knowns come up for mp3s)

Duran Duran (there are an obscure band called Duran Duran Duran)

Fish (can even be confused with Phish)

Tony Banks (once found an unknown artist with same name)

Ray Wilson (same)

Justin Hayward (there's also a DJ)

Brian May (Queen guitarist and late Australian film composer)

Roger Taylor (drummers for Queen and Duran Duran, which would probably have caused issues back at EMI)

Rush (even the boys have some chancers that are really fly by night calling themselves that, as well as Big Time Rush [please!], Mahogany Rush [also Cancon], Tom Rush, Jennifer Rush, films called Rush)

Savoy (can also get mixed up with Savoy Brown with late Oswego County resident Kim Simmonds)

Jim Diamond (was once a Diamond Jim out there)

PhD (his duo had to contend with a hip-hop one)

Bandit (his earlier band with AC/DCs Cliff Williams and Kate Bush's husband Danny McIntosh)

Status Quo (not to be confused with hip hop artist Stat Quo or song from High School Musical)

IQ (you have to have one to know who the real one are)

Jadis (even them, but could even get conflated with character on The Walking Dead)

Pallas (founder Graeme Murray originally called his band Rainbow, but that's in the same boat)

Magnum (I recently got a CD from the wrong Magnum, which I got rid of)

INXS (was once a shop in the Mohawk Valley)

Visage (was spa run by my doctor likely stopped by Steve Stranges estate if not the state)

Genesis (was once obscure band in the US at the same of the one I know being formed and another in Colombia, and also the late Genesis P-Orridge)

Alan Williams (because of others with the name, the one I used to know used the name Al Chantrey)

Toyah (not to be confused with Toya)

Slaughter (Clark County and Canadian bands)

X (US and Japan)

The Beat (Paul Collins's Beat and The English Beat)

Earth, Wind & Fire (not to be confused with Earth Fire, who Boris wants me to find)

Cinema (short-lived Yes spinoff settled with other Cinemas after becoming Yes proper again)

Tony Kaye (original Yes member and fellow UK pat and director)

Jon Anderson (not to be confused with country artist John Anderson)

Michael Jackson (even the King of Pop had two others with the same name)

Joe Jackson (his dad and the pop/jazz artist)

Paul Young (solo artist and late Sad Café/Mike & the Mechanics vocalist)

Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmores band; original name for Pallas; Sissy Spacek once recorded as Rainbo)

Velvet Underground (band with SU's own Lou Reed; early band with AC/DCs Malcolm Young)

Vanessa Williams (SU alum, Melrose Place co-star [both did Soul Food], and gospel artist)

Bush (UK and Canadian bands)

Arena (pictured; UK band and over a dozen or so different artists with that name)

Hootenanny Singers (Swedish folk band with ABBAs Björn Ulvæus and obscure US band)

Greatest Hits/Best Ofs

rihanna
Rihanna in concert, 2011.  She came to Syracuse just months before this show.
I don't usually write about todays Top 40 artists because it's almost too easy (I'll just let Perez Hilton do that), yet there are a number of them as well as some from yesteryear that have yet to release a greatest hits and/or best of album and have enough of a track record now to fill one up.  Russian bootleg ones exist of many of the following, but an official release is imminent for all of these artists:

Rihanna (above; already approaching the tenth anniversary of "Pon de Replay"!)
Beyoncé (Destinys Child have one)
Coldplay (Chris Martin recorded a duet with RiRi which could go on both albums)
Justin Timberlake (there is one for 'NSYNC proper however)
Kate Bush (last one was in 1986, so she has more tracks to collect)
AC/DC (have refused to put one out, yet the end of the band is likely not too far off)
Metallica (also declined to make a compilation and own their masters)
Lady Gaga (just performed with Metallica at Grammys)
Tool (not quite mainstream yet they too don't believe in a collection)
Katy Perry (maybe in 2018 for the 10th anniversary)
Scissor Sisters (overlooked at home and currently on extended sabbatical)
Lana del Rey (yes, even her)
Selena Gomez (includes with the Scene)
Miley Cyrus (not including her Hannah Montana material from more innocent times)*
The All-American Rejects (much of these are on Polydor where I found many of these)
Take That (also underrated in the US yet have enough since their reunion over a decade ago)
The Jonas Brothers (the teenybopper nature of their classics may limit their appeal now)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (including some solo Karen O)
Mariah Carey (compilation and/or boxed set of her Universal-owned albums)
One Direction (now on hiatus)
Taylor Swift (may have to wait until 2018 as new album is out; her ex is in 1D)
John Mayer (Taylors other ex as well as Katys; Mr-Can't-Make-a-Commitment!  Coming soon to CNY)
Calvin Harris (this isn't a gossip column, yet he also used to be with TayTay!)
System of a Down (a new studio album is needed as well)
Little Mix (even them already)
NERD (could throw in solo Pharrell Williams*)
Justin Bieber (even though "Baby" and "Love Yourself" couldn't be more different; Selenas ex)
Susan Boyle (the time has come for a collection; I do admire her for being a late bloomer nonetheless)
David Gilmour (should keep live versions of Floyd proper classics off so he can stand on his own)
Kanye West (he thinks he's the greatest and may also think that of every track he's recorded.  I'm not endorsing this baciagaloop, just saying how even he might consider putting a collection together)
Alicia Keys (may have to wait until later in the year as Here is still fresh in promotional phase)*
Usher (will also have to wait as his latest release hasn't been out that long either)*
Shakira (this one would be of her English-language hits like "Don't Bother" and "Underneath Your Clothes")*
James Blunt (currently has a studio release to plug, but a compilation next year would mark a decade since "You're Beautiful")
Muse (bought a few of their studio albums for you-know-who but even he can't be bothered with cherry picking)
Fiona Apple (could also use another new album first)
Fantasia (only Idol alum here)

*The Voice judges past and present as this pattern occurred.  No past contestants combined however have enough to do a collection just yet!

Vinyl wishlist

Only have the international edition on LP right now.

By the cover art can be obtained from Australian Music Corporation Pty. Ltd., Fair use, Link

Records have been coming back in recent years, although not quite as en masse as decades past, but still making headway. Later titles and editions are rarer and/or more expensive though I found a few of those. Some titles I don't have on LP, but I do on CD or even tape, and others I don't have at all just yet, so here's what I hope to find in the months to come:

Pennsylvania: The Prog State?

From Harrisburg with Love: The state flag.
For some reason if there's one state in the union that knows prog it's Pennsylvania, the Keystone State.  One may be the late DJ Ed Sciaky from the Philadelphia radio market promoted it (mainly Yes and Renaissance).  Another could possibly be a colonial connection, who knows?  It's not that Commonwealth.  I had been in touch with someone in Lycoming County who knew a lot of these (sadly he is no longer with us), and another from there now in Huntingdon County also is a bit of an expert.  I went to a shop in Luzerne County and found Steve Hackett and Mike Oldfield CDs.  ROSfest in Gettysburg (Civil War capital) and the now-defunct NEARfest in the Allentown-Bethlehem area brought in bands from around the globe.  Annie Haslam from Renaissance now lives in Bucks County.  I may have to head that way again once the weather is better and a trip in my time frame and price range is available.
Indie labels MVD Audio have had their offices in Philly suburb Oaks but moved not too far off in Pottsville, and InsideOut Music had their US offices in Pittsburgh but moved them west to LA when they were taken over by indie metal label Century Media.
Philly native Sherman Hemsley boasted of listening to bands like Gentle Giant, Eloy, Gong and Nektar when he was alive despite being even older than the band members themselves and had recorded with Jon Anderson.
While prog will always have fans far and wide, the land of pretzels and cheesesteaks will always hold a special place in America for it all.

5 CD series

In the past few years a new kind of boxed set has been appearing in shops that contain 5 (sometimes just 3) CDs of the same artist (or theme in some cases) in a slipcase with "mini-LPs" but without liner notes or many details.  The price is decent for 5 CDs together.  Sometimes there are titles that have been rare for a long time, which was the case when I bought The Cars set which included Panorama (I'll have to find it by itself now).  All three majors have these.  Warners recent purchase of Parlophone from EMI is bringing out new
Combines solo Limahl and the band proper
Original Album Series
sets from Kajagoogoo/Limahl (just got this one), Cockney Rebel (a bit of a challenge but I have that too now), and UFO to name a few.  They already released those with Yes (which I bought), Alanis Morissette (I bought all 5 in hers one at a time, 3 from her old stomping ground) and Fleetwood Mac (which I'm holding out for) even though they'll all have titles I bought separately with bonus tracks (those without can be sold which I did with one old Yes CD).  Universal also have had these but with whole cases for Elton John and Rush but a sleeves only one with Bob Marley is available and I got it last week.  Sonys Original Album Classics (US and EU) have included Sarah MacLachlan (outside Canada), Elvis Presley, REO Speedwagon, Santana and Bob Dylan (he has a couple out now).  Don't think the indies would do this.  EMI UK before they were sold would reissue two at a time in a regular slimline double jewel box with Blondie, Gerry Rafferty and Talk Talk (I have this) to name a few but also without much information.  I wish there was a Kate Bush set but don't count on it so I bought them separately instead even though she had a more elaborate one of her own in 1990 which is scarce now.
This could be a way to get people to buy CDs again with all the downloading but there's always gonna be something new for collectors to spend their money on.  Warners also have trilogies.

Life after EMI

Divvied up
Over the past year, the properties of EMI was doled out among four companies as one could not have it all under EU regulations.  Universal received the lions share getting Capitol, Harvest (brought back from dormancy), the EMI label and Virgin; while Warners would get Parlophone which includes Regal, IRS and Chrysalis.  The Beatles, who put Parlophone on the map, will now be with Capitol worldwide, as will solo Robbie Williams (hardly heard of in the States which is the case with his group Take That), who already moved to Universal prior to the merger.  Ironically many pre-2012 EMI refugees now find themselves under UMG distribution, such as The Rolling Stones, Queen, solo Paul McCartney and Mike Oldfield (who moved his catalogue to Mercury only to find it now managed by original label Virgin).  Parlophone artists such as Coldplay, Jethro Tull (on Chrysalis), and Conor Maynard (a newer one) were signed to Capitol in the US but I wonder if Warners' catalogue label Rhino will now be reissuing that material worldwide in future.  Chrysalis US artists such as Pat Benetar and Blondie will now be Capitol ones.  There is some catching up to do.  Some titles may be bought back by the artists and released by indie labels which is possibly the case with some of my prog heroes like Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks.  More as I get it.

Vegetarians and Vegans

Morrissey Live at SXSW Austin in March 2006-9
Mr "Meat is Murder" himself, Morrissey.

Many of my favourite artists don't eat meat or in some cases even any dairy*.  Even St Francis de Assisi may not have been able to do this!

Alanis Morrissette*
Boy George (may be pescatarian)
The Beatles (even John Lennon was on a vegan type diet for most of the last decade of his life)
Kate Bush
Geezer Butler
Annie Haslam (Renaissance)
Roger Hodgson
JD Fortune (ex-INXS)
Morrissey* (I don't buy anything of his for myself but his devotion to animal rights is unparalleled)
Phil Collins
John Wetton
Steve Howe
Chris Squire
Lawrence Gowan
Jon Anderson (also pescatarian)
Alan White
Brian May
Paul and Linda McCartney (the second missus is also vegan but I'm not gonna put her here!)
Fiona Apple*
Frida
Limahl
Agnetha Fältskog*
Ozzy Osbourne

My Pirate Collection

The Eleventh Hour! by Magnum (not actual CD)

In the past decade, my collection of pirates has grown, especially in the past couple years. I just have to boast about how much I've acquired. CD-Rs don't count 'cos anyone can make those these days. MP3s; oh, please!
All courtesy Boris except * from a shop or elsewhere. Bootlegs will be on another list in future.

Non-US made only (even if its just the disc or tape itself). Singles can also be thrown in if I don't have them already. Do contact me if you're interested in a trade or sale. CD-Rs do not count! Pirates are OK though. If you think somethings missing, then I have it already. Subject to change at anytime. Will make reasonable offers. If you suggest VHS cassette or DVDs, make sure it'll play in an NTSC player.  I can possibly convert PAL and SECAM DVDs, but the tapes I'd have to go to a specialist for, so do ask first or copy it for me, please. I may list what video titles I'd like at a later time, but it is painstaking and time-consuming. Mainly CDs I need right now though wanted LPs are now in a separate list to avoid confusion. Subject to change.

+ Yet to be released.
++Pending
+++I only have this on LP and/or cassette right now which isn't as convenient for me anymore.
* Also on Boris's list.
