The Beatles Capitol Albums Volume 3

The infamous butcher cover taken by the recently departed Robert Whitaker.
Heres an original post for once!  I don't always have time to put more than links.
Beatle people in North America as we all know had different albums to buy than the rest of the world back in the mid-'60s.  This just gives the collectors more to work with today.
Since Capitol Records have released The Capitol Album Volumes 1 and 2, one would think there should be a third one.  Even with the long-awaited remasters of the UK albums in September 2009, I'm sure some people want four more US albums officially on CD rather than from Dr Ebbetts or CD Maximum (like my copy of Help!)
This is what the boxed set would have:

Yesterday... and Today (pictured)
Magical Mystery Tour
Hey Jude/The Beatles Again
The Beatles Story (dated but never officially on CD)

Introducing the Beatles (Please Please Me - 2) and A Hard Days Night were originally released by other labels in the States so they wouldn't count.  Capitol added reverb in their echo chamber down cellar at the famous tower in Hollywood ("Paperback Writer" on US 45 will have it).  Audiophiles can really have a listen and hear whats different.  Live at the Hollywood Bowl and Live at the Star Club are also in need of an official reissue.  All authorised Beatle product today has to be approved unanimously by Messrs McCartney and Starr as well as widows Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison (née Arias).

Landmark Theatre - The Return

Landmark Theatre, Syracuse
Forgot to take my own when I'm able to get there.  To save time, I used this free image.

Now that the Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse will be back this fall bigger and better than ever.  It will accomodate more A-list acts yet the integrity and legacy of this local jewel has not been compromised.  November and December have shows lined up already but for after New Years, theres plenty of room on the calendar.  I was told by someone there that they're really a rental house and don't decide themselves who will use the facility but rather promoters, managers and agents will book the former local Loews picture palace like they would any venue.  Here is a list of people I want to see at the Landmark:

The Moody Blues*
The Musical Box*
The Australian Pink Floyd Show*
Yes
Asia
Rush
Peter Gabriel
Def Leppard
Duran Duran
Fleetwood Mac

Who would you like to see?  Drop a line.  There is concern about parking though.  There are a couple car parks you could use.  At least those of us who take the bus can get right there for the most part.
Great to have the Landmark back after a year or two of reconstruction that continues for another month.

*Have been to the Landmark before as far as I know.

Asia featuring John Payne - Where they should go

AFJP in Kenora, ONT taking a bow last year.
Getting Asia featuring John Payne booked is no easy task. Because of confusion with the original band, promoters find themselves at a loss.  However, some places sporadically placed across the US and sometimes Canada are willing to take on the LA-based offshoot that includes Messrs Schellen, Perry and Norlander.
The bands site have confirmed dates listed.  One in Denver, CO I hoped to get for one loyal fan who has no love for the other band.  Another in Florida for a fan there despite the heat.  As for the rest of us, where can we see our heroes?  For me anyway, heres where they could go this year:

Maybe next year:

Alive at Five, Downtown Albany
Avenue Summer Concert Series, Endicott
Jiffy Lube Live, outside Washington, DC Bristow, VA
Lilac Festival, Rochester Highland Park
Molson Canal Concert Series, Lockport
Saranac Summer Concert Series, Utica
Toyota Summer Concert Series, Watertown

Where would you like to see the band?

Canada, Eh?!

The famous maple leaf!
Canada has a unique position in the music world.  They have their own plethora of talent, and their own way of doing things. I try to get there at least once a year.
For their own artists (chiefly Anglophone), we've seen Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, and Justin Bieber to name a few.  In order for them to be heard at home, the CRTC have laws that make sure TV and radio have a certain amount of homegrown programming.
Bands like Rush and Nickelback are now signed to one label in their backyard, and another everywhere else.  This was part of the CanCon regulations, but some get signed through the States such as Drake and Avril Lavigne.  French speakers initially had Céline Dion to themselves, and they still do with GarouOctobre and Mylène Farmer.  Montréals The Musical BoxMystery and Simple Plan are Francophones but perform in English.
For releases from international artists, they're usually analogous to US editions across the lake.  It varies by album. Sometimes they match everyone but the States.
Releases from both sides of the St Lawrence/Great Lakes Seaway cross-pollinate.  I see Canadian releases as far as 250 km from the border, while some US releases can be seen across the 49th.
Another thing is that Canadian releases can have the same sleeve or disc as the US.  Also, some US releases have inserts or discs/tapes made in Canada.  Thats NAFTA for ya!
Our neighbour to the north has a lot to offer everyone. Be sure to get something from there sometime.

Asia featuring John Payne - Arcana

I have just learnt that the new studio album from Asia featuring John Payne will now be called Arcana instead of Architects of Time. The previously announced name was used for a one-off project instead. The album may be released in November, but it could even be summertime. It will be the first studio release by the Asia spinoff (not connected to the original lineup, who are releasing their next album Omega). It will be released in Japan by Sony, and by vanity label Devgel worldwide, with a US licencee to be announced (once thought to be Favoured Nations).

2011 CNY Outdoor Concert Series

Asia featuring John Payne, one of the Holy Grails for me.
Because of two ill-fated concert series in Syracuse last year, there doesn't seem to be one this year apart from the funfair and a few small time events.  Even if a shows free, its not always easy to get people to come.  Some promoters just can't cut it.  These shows used to be at Inner Harbour, the Federal Building, and the CNY Regional Market.  Now, I'd have to go to Rochester and Albany for such a thing as they seem to have better resources.
If I could start my own, here are who would come, one per week:

Asia featuring John Payne
Marillion
Pallas
Rush (up in the air with the boys)
Yes
The Moody Blues (have since come to town)
Culture Club (coming 2 Sept 2016)
INXS
Duran Duran
Childhoods End (now split)

There are numerous local businesses who would sponsor the shows.  The cost of security would be high, whether its private or the local police.  Then who would be willing to host the shows?  It may be too late to start getting something this year but perhaps next year it could happen.
Who would you like to see?  Remember, this articles not about an actual live series in CNY, I'm afraid.

The John Payne Collection

JP as we all know him.
In 2007, John Payne released a compilation of tracks with Asia, Lunatica, solo, and CCCP called Different Worlds.  Turns out theres more than enough for another such release.  He has been performing for over thirty years.  However, it took him a long time to get ahead. Here are some tracks that would go well on the comp:

The John Payne Band
Haunted
Born on Halloween
Magic Eyes
I Want You to Burn

Stringer
Thats When the Crying Starts
The Letter

John Payne (solo)
Fly Away
Coming Home
Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got
Looking at Her Picture

Asia
Rise

GPS
The Haunting

Keplers Law
Save Your Prayers

Lisa LaRue 2KX
Save Me
Fast and Blue
Mystery of the Rose
Jam Jehan Nima
Recurring Dream

Lunatica
Farewell My Love

Asia featuring John Payne
Military Man (2007)
Long Way from Home (2007)

Architects of Time
From Decoding the Lost Symbol:

What is Lost Will Be Found
Verbum Significatum

Moonstone
TBD

Right now, JP is trying to focus on finishing the new AFJP album, which is highly anticipated, and Raiding the Rock Vault.  Then after some time on the road, he may consider taking a trip down memory lane.
Many of these tracks are rare and/or unavailable, so trying to gather them all yourself would be an uphill endeavour, so lets just hold out for this collection then.

Queen remasters

Featuring "We Well Rock You", "We Are the Champions", "Spread Your Wings", and "Its Late".
Last December, Queen signed to Island Records after two generations with EMI.  They remain with Hollywood Records in the US and Canada (owned by Disney yet distributed by Island owner Universal).  Everywhere else, the back catalogue is being reissued in batches of five.  Last March, the albums from Queen (1973) to A Day at the Races reached the shops with extended liner notes and bonus tracks.  The next five will be released next June.  Not sure about the pattern of drop dates, but I am with five at a time (to save money perhaps).  More info as I get it.

Dakou: Made for China

Chinese flag. When an article pertains to a particular country, I use their flag.  Also is copyright free.
The one thing made in mainland China that doesn't show up in shops in the west as often are CDs.  On the other hand, those that don't sell in the west wind up in the peoples republic of over a billion.  They're supposed to be recycled or left for dead at a dumpsite.  However, many wind-up in the hands of kerb-side dealers, selling them for a few yuan.  These are usually cut-out CDs that have a saw-gash (dakou in Chinese) on the spine the labels unload.  This is how a lot of western music is discovered in the communist nation, which limits the media as we all know (just saying whats in the papers).  Some CDs have cut marks, making them useless, but some survive, and a subculture has sprouted among the youth.
There are a lot of used CDs that even collect dust in the charity shops, so maybe I could collect some to send to China.  Maybe find some pirate releases someone could send back, like I found in the former USSR, though those are more painfully obvious than Russias even to the layman.  A chemist in my area before they sold out to a chain used to carry pirated DVDs (I have one of Cheaper by the Dozen '03).  Some CD-Rs are made on the Asian continent as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong, and those are used to make pirates, but thats too easy.
As for dakou, there could be albums that can't even be given away in my country, but could either be sold on the street in Shanghai or turned into compost.
Maybe record companies will find another way to outsource unwanted product if they feel they're haemorraging money this way.  Too easy to put something in the dustbin here.

Big Sister

Their major label debut, which is available from amazon.com.
This post is about a female blues-rock band from Woodstock, NY (not where the festival was, as I found out years ago) called Big Sister.  I heard of them through their bass player Desiree Williams from her day job where I used to live.  She gave me two of their indie releases, Why My Mind Up and Left and Some Songs.  I knew about 2000s So Hi How Are You? whilst it was being made, but it didn't come out until after I returned to CNY.  It fell into obscurity when the label Capricorn was absorbed into Volcano, and it's a cutout on CD, though used copies are pennies, which is bad because that shows that it could go out of print and/or it was a flop.  It is still in print on mp3, as well as Some Songs, but I will offer Why My Mind Up and Left here.  The first album, Live at the Lake, had another girl on bass, so I didn't get that, so it'd be a Holy Grail to the bands cult following. Their official site 404ed, but that and my fan site are on Wayback, so you can look at those despite the dated info they'll have.  The band were said to come to my area, but I never had a chance to see them.  I do have a listen to them now and again.  I don't usually get something just for a bass player (unless they're a solo artist and/or frontperson), but Dez was the exception.  I haven't seen her in over a decade, and only heard from her once, as we both moved on since then.
I remember that they know Patti Rothberg, whos had an underground career of her own.  She painted the Some Songs cover in acrylic and provided harmonies on the next album.
If you're looking for something new and different, have a listen to Big Sister.

Jadis
John Jowitt (late of IQ) and Gary Chandler of Jadis which I can't use on Wikipedia

Several artists are in need of free-licenced photos for Wikipedia.  If the band are still together or the artist is still alive and kicking, then it has to be under an adaptable Creative Commons licence.  Flickr sometimes have what I need, but people fall through the cracks.  If you own original photos of any of these fine folks, are you willing to upload to Commons and/or Flickr?  OTRS is too much trouble.  Also tell me who else could use pictures.

Lately, I've been noticing that some new CDs sold in shops in the US are being made in México.  First, it was Sony, then Real World (via Caroline) and now Capitol/EMIUniversal and Warner could be next.  Some might say its NAFTA.  Others will say its the decline of CD sales in recent years.  I say its a little of both.  It will say on the back on the seal if its from south of the border.  This isn't the same as getting an import originally intended for sale there.  It won't always say if its made there or in the States.  Plants in Olymphant, PA (WEA/Warner), Jacksonville, FL (EMI), and New Jersey (Sony) must have laid off people.  To think the CDs could be made in mainland China like many other dry goods these days.  That I wouldn't mind, though that country has widespread piracy as well as having taken in low-selling EU imports.
Like China, labour is cheaper in México than America.  This could be the driving force of this latest trend.  DVDs are also falling victim to this outsourcing scheme.  For those, it should say on the shrink wrap.  Blu-Rays, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised.  They use NTSC in México, so the DVDs should work in the US and Canada, as well as Japan for that matter.
So the next time you buy a brand new CD or DVD in the United States, it could be made in México.

Madonna - Movie Madge: The Soundtrack Hits

Madonna Confessions Tour Boombox
The Material Girl on tour.

Heres a compilation I've always wanted Madonna to make. Shes better at making songs for films than starring in them! I made an iMix once but its expired now. Even though Rhino could put this out, Madge is still a power player in showbiz, so she and her management would have to approve first. Also, she doesn't really like to be called Madge, so it'd have another title.  Heres the list:

Holiday (The Wedding Singer)
Into the Groove (Desparately Seeking Susan)
Crazy for You (Vision Quest)
The Gambler (Vision Quest)
Live to Tell (At Close Range)
Whos That Girl? (Whos That Girl?)
Causing a Commotion (Whos That Girl?)
Vogue (Dick Tracy/The Devil Wears Prada)
Hanky Panky (Dick Tracy)
Like a Virgin (live) (Truth or Dare)
This Used to Be My Playground (A League of Their Own)
I Remember (With Honours)
You Must Love Me (Evita)
Don't Cry for Me Argentina (Evita)
Another Suitcase in Another Hall (Evita)
Beautiful Stranger (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me)
American Pie (The Next Best Thing)
Time Stood Still (The Next Best Thing)
Die Another Day (Die Another Day)

Till then, you can just get each track seperately.
